Warabi (a.k.a. Pohole or Ho'i'o) it's the unfurled fern fronds found in the wet, green tropical areas on the east sides of Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii. Warabi is not the same species as the fiddlehead ferns found on the mainland, but can be used in the the same ways– sauteed or steamed – as well as tossed into salads.
Mahalo to kipster11 and wholagal...FTF!
As a child I can remember going into the hawaiian rainforest to pick the local favorite. Whenever we had a party or for special occasions, mom would cleanthe ferns and parboil them to mix with seaweed and tiny dried fish and make a nice "pupu" to go with drinks.
This regular cache is hidden in a beautiful grove of these wild ferns. The ferns require lots of water to thrive ,so expect to walk on muddy grounds and slick surfaces. This prestine area is such a beautiful place. look for the young shoots and pick up a snack from Kane's forest.
Park along the wide shoulders of the Puainako Extention and walk a short ways from the road to find this cache. Please take care of the area and try not to step on the ferns, replace the cache exactly as you found it...be safe and have fun.
