A cache placed not too far from the spot where Lt Col JM Gawne was mortally wounded during the Anglo Boer War at the battle of Lancaster Hill in Vryheid.
To find this cache you will need to get some information from the Waypoint which is where the monument can be found and do some simple calculations.
S 27 44.898 E 030 46.946 - Gawne Monument
Take the sum of the date on the monument dd mm yyyy....
eg 17 Sep (09) 1901 = 1+7=a 0+9=b 1+9+0+1=c thus a=8 b=9 c=11
((a+b)*c)+(a+b)=xxx
((b*c)*2)+(c+a+b)=yyy
Take these calculations and add yyy to your South co-ordinates after the period eg .898+yyy and subtract xxx from the East Co-ordinates eg .946-xxx - Remember you will only change the values after the period. So if the total is over 1000 only use the last three digits. The cache is In the Lancaster Hill Reserve and is a wonderful little reserve on the edge of the town of Vryheid. Access to the reserve is open to the public between 6am and 6pm and has a small fee payable at the gate via a honesty box. R10 per adult although it is up to your discretion if you want to put in more.... Some runners use this park and although they need not put in anything they also do contribute. The reserve contains a number of species of wildlife such as Zebra's Antelope and a variety of birdlife. The road to the cache is in good condition for most vehicles although I would suggest you take it easy after rains as some of the road may be a bit washed out in places. But the road to the top is cemented so getting to the Vryheid View cache i also have up on the hill is fine. If the road is bad after this you might need to walk, the hike is probably going to take less than a hour to do if this is the case. Any LDV will be fine to drive right up to the cache.
