Nukolii Beach Cache 2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ScouterHerb & MrsB: On advise from our friend Hanappaa we are archiving this. He indicates a homeless person has set up camp there and he worries about people trying to find it and running a foul of someone in the dark. He advises that they closed Hanamaulu beach park to the homeless so they are going to other places, this is one of them. Sorry to see it go but we may try to set up another near the beach as it is well worth the visit.

Geocache Description:

Cache is a small Lock-N-Lock. Sugested Parking co-ordinates and directions are below.

Located just a few yards inland from Nukolii Beach, near the end of Marine Base Road (sometimes called Kauai Beach Road on maps) which is an un-marked road at the south end of Wailua Golf Course and can only be accessed traveling north. If traveling south you will have to turn around at Kauai Beach Resort. This road, while rough, can be accessed by car when dry. We would travel it with caution if it has been raining a lot. We recommend parking at the coordinates below and walk to the cache. You can also park farther South at the Kauai Beach Resort or beyond and walk down the beach to the cache site. This involves crossing a small creek emptying into the ocean just past the Hotel.  From the parking walk along the well traveled road (by Locals) running along the top of the beach, until you see some rocks blocking vehicle access just east of the cache and walk down into the little valley beyond them and follow a faint trail to the cache (spoiler pictures below). This area has been used to dump coconut debree so watch your footing. Flip Flops not recomended.

This Cache is a replacement for our original Nukolii Beach Cache which was archived after the hide spot was demolished by locals for War Games and Dirt Bikes. Thus we set this one up in a more remote area north of the original.

Nukolii Beach is a 2 mile long part of a line of beaches running from Wailua Bay in the north, to Hanama’ulu Bay in the south. The beach itself runs from Lydgate Park in the North to a Parking Lot south of the Kauai Beach Resort (the Hotel and some maps refer to it as Kauai Beach).

It is a popular spot for ATV and 4 wheel Drive access to the Beach and surrounding Dunes. Thus watch for Muggles!

It is a beautiful long stretch of Beaches to walk, enjoy the seascape and watch for Whales./p>

An interesting note is that many Maps show a ship wreck off shore at about N22 00.881, W 159 20.064. One possibility is that it could be the "Okanagan" a bald-headed four masted schooner of 721 tons and 950 M capacity. It was built in 1895 and was wrecked on Ahukini Point December 24, 1919. However we can not find any confirmation of this or location of the "Okanagan". If anyone finds more information, please let us know!

Be aware the ocean off the beach has very strong currents and thus it is not normally a safe beach for Swimming and a number of people have died after being swept to sea!

Sorry there is no FTF Prize, just the honor, so congutlations Gecko dude consider yourself honored here!

Small note on cache maintenance: Hanapaa has graciously agreed to assist with maintenance. Thanks!
