Geocache Description:

A stroll along the Penicuik - Dalkeith walkway will take you to Rosslyn Castle Station, buggies will be able to get close to the cache site but not up onto the platform.

Rosslyn Station was opened with the Penicuik branch on 2nd September 1872.  In February 1874 it was renamed the Rosslyn Castle Station to avoid confusion with Roslin on the Loanhead branch.  The station also comprised a goods yard, which included a warehouse for the gunpowder works.  The station closed to passengers on 10th September 1951 but remained open to goods traffic until 3rd August 1959.

The station now sits on the route of the National Cycle Network 196, on the Penicuik-Dalkeith walkway. I broke in my pony, Pendragon, along this walkway - I think it's why he's so bombproof as it's a real multi-user path and he got to experience buggies, cyclists, walkers, dogs etc from an early age. When I started caching I was surprised not to find one at this station, as I've enjoyed the others I've found at disused stations, so it seemed an ideal place for my first attempt at placing a cache. Many thanks to the Midlothian Ranger Service for giving me permission to place this, if all goes well with this one I hope that they will permit my other cache ideas for the area!
