This cache is in a camo bag near a small war memorial just outside the village of Screveton. The memorial commemorates one specific event.
It is a sunny afternoon in April 1944. In Europe war rages but in this quiet little country lane the timeless sparrows chirp and squabble amongst the hedgerows. A blackbird sings out his ownewrship of this corner of the fields and the distant drone of sky-borne piston engines throbs, barely noticed. There is a distant clatter; the low hum stops suddenly, replaced by an unfamiliar and slowly swelling hiss. People in the village glance to the skies as young men fight with the controls of two stricken olive green war machines, desperate to keep them away from houses. Then they slam abruptly into the peace. Thre is a seismic splintering of metal, Perspex, skin and bone. There is kerosene, flame, smoke and burning. And eleven more mothers are due telegrams that no mother should ever have to read.
In 2005 the grateful residents of Screveton erected this memorial to the fliers of an Avro Lancaster and an Airspeed Oxford that collided over the village and whose last acts were to steer their stricken aircraft away from their homes. Out of respect the cache is located a few yards away from the memorial itself, where it is guarded by some oversized neighbours....
Congrats to Northking on another FTF!
***** When I first hid this cache I included a disposable camera in the contents and asked willing finders to leave selfies of themselves on it. I have now developed the film in the camera. Sadly but not surprisingly not all the pictures came out but those that did can now be found in the photo gallery section for the cache. If you are in any of the pictures and want me to name you then do please let me know!*****
