Geocache Description:


This cache is part of my Great Lakes History series. The Charles B. Hill was a wood propeller powered by compound condensing engine. Until 1905 it was known of as Delaware and operated by Anchor Line. Maybe the changed name lead to her demise? The Hill was built in 1878 at Cleveland Ohio by Thomas Quale's Sons, She was 252' x 36' x 16' and weighed 1732 tons. Cargo at time of loss was coal.
The Hill was towing the barge Commodore from Buffalo NY when they encountered a storm early on the morning of November 23, 1906. The hill began to leak in water and Captain Coleman decided to cut the Commodore loose and make an attempt to reach Fairport Harbor Ohio. As she made her way thru the storm heading for safe harbor her port seams opened allowing water to pour into her holds. The Captain turned the Hill south and headed straight for shore dumping cargo in a final attempt . The Hill ran aground off of North Madison Ohio. (Straight out from this location) However the distance to shore and the pounding waters kept the crew from reaching land. The tug Annie left Fairport Harbor at approximately 10am in an attempt to rescue the crew. It took the Annie nearly 2 hours to reach the Hill fighting the rough waters. The Hills crew of 20 was rescued and they returned to Fairport around 3:30pm. The Commodore with her anchors set was later recovered by a tug and taken to Ashtabula Ohio. In June of 1918 the Commodore and her steamer tow vessel perished at the west end of Lake Erie.
Today the remains lay in 18 feet of water about 1/2 mile from shore and have been destroyed over the years. There are 2 boilers in the area along with steam pipes and metal pieces. The hull of the Hill itself is in 3 sections and is home to many fish.
