In times past, this land was part of the bog that protected the southern edge of the town. Bought and gifted to the town in 1891, a local benefactor paid for the land to be dried, park to be laid out and gifted the gates seperating the park from the nearby road. Home to the town Bowling Green and tennis courts, there are also memorials to Duns Scotus (a Fransiscan monk and doctor from the 13th century), the 127 Polish soldiers from the Scottish Borders who died in the Second World War, and the town war memorial.
