Heartbreak Hotel was first recorded by Elvis Presley in 1956. It was written by Tommy Durden and Mae Boren Axton, with the lyrics based on a newspaper article about the suicide of a lonely man who jumped from a hotel window. The man destroyed all of his identity papers before jumping to his death, leaving only a suicide note with the line "I walk a lonely street".
