Greytown's recently discovered spring
Takaka has it's Pupu Springs where some of the world's most pure natual water gushes forth. Hanmer has it's thermal springs where many happy hours can be spent relaxing and easing tensions in it's thermal wonders. Rotorua has it's Rainbow Springs where large trout can be viewed happy at play in the numerous aquaria. Now Greytown has it's recently discovered spring.
The origin of the Greytown Spring is a little uncertain. It seems to have arrisen from the deep alluvial gravels of the Waiohine River flood plain possibly as a consequence of the Christchuch earthquake or some similiar event. What ever its origin it is certain to give satisfaction to many.
Chemical analysis:- Very high levels of the elements Fe, and C with traces of Si, Mg, Mn. Also associated with significant levels of the compounds ferrous oxide. ferric oxide and in certain conditions hydrogen oxide. Traces of geonuts may be found in the vicinity.
The cache is located in the grounds of the Greytown Croquet Club. The club is happy for you to enter the grounds at anytime to locate the spring, infact some of them are quiet interested to see what geocachers actually look like. The cache is nestled within 2 metres of the spring. Can you please respect the playing surface and if you need to open the gate please shut it after you.
