Geocache Description:

The Norwood Bridge is arguably the grandest of Winnipeg’s bridges (in competition with the Provencher Bridge downstream).  It was first constructed in 1890 and, like its neighbour the Main Street Bridge, was originally built privately before being purchased by the municipal government.  The former Town of St. Boniface bought this bridge over the Red River in 1904, connecting it to the nearby City of Winnipeg.  Still today, the bridge provides a major link between St. Boniface (St. Mary’s Road) and Downtown Winnipeg (Main Street via Queen Elizabeth Way), and likewise between the north and south ends of the city in general.

The bridge is named for the area of St. Boniface known as Norwood, which is a combination of the words “north” and “wood”.  It has twice been reconstructed; in 1931, and in 1996-98, when a second span was added.  The latter renovations added the bridge's signature arch, pillars, and stone bison heads.  During the winter, a recreational ice trail passes under the bridge.

The cache is located just off an active transportation trail near the bridge.  It should be able to withstand spring flood levels. BYOP.
