Geocache Description:

One of a series of Caches with Industrial Archeological connections in the Moss Valley

The bridge that crosses the Moss Brook just North West of the Seldom Seen Mine is constructed using the base of an ancient Pack Horse bridge. Over that bridge, strings of mules carried the Scythes and Sickles produced in the valley were taken to Bawtry and thence by boat via the Rivers Idle and Trent to Hull. Their final destination being America.  In 1777 this journey was shortened by the Opening of the Chesterfield Canal which came within 2 miles of the valley.

Upstream from the bridge you can see the remains of the Lower Carlton Dam  which was used to power wheels to grind Scythes and Sickles. One of the old grinding wheels has been used in the bridge higher up the valley and another is at the entrance of the bridge Inn at Ford.

The cache is sited a little way off as the owner of the wood has not given permission for a cache by the Dam which is in an SSI
