Geocache Description:

Sheep keeping has been prominent on the marsh since at least the 7th century. The original Romney Marsh sheep were developed on low lying lands in kent and Sussex and adjoining lands near the English Channel. The area is isolated and exposed and ideal for this breed of sheep which needs minimum attention, they have no interest in wandering off and need little fencing. The breed expanded over the rest of the south East of England and became named as Kent sheep, it then spread across the world and the name Romney came into general use.It is often referred to as `the best known sheep in the world`
Special buildings (lookers hut) is a type of agricultural building that appears to have developed during the 17th and 18th centuries perculiar to the Romney Marsh area and the river valleys. The 2nd half of the 20th century saw changes in agricultural methods resulting in the decline and destruction on many of these lookers huts. The Romney Marsh lookers huts are different from other sheephouses and sheepcotes across Britain in that the latter were used solely for animals where as the Romney Marsh lookers huts were used by `The Looker` for his own temporary use and to store medicines and tools for his work. At their peak these huts would have been in the hundreds scattered across the marsh, but sadly only 12 now remain, This is one of the few. When i came here to the marsh twenty years ago this one was in fairly good order with a roof and door in situ but sadly over the years it is now in a sad state of repair probably due to vandalism, lucky for me twenty years ago i took some photos of it. This hut was also used in the war by the R.O.C for observation purposes. You are looking for a disguised film pot container, (roadside of the fence )please hide it well, please sign the log book, if not dont log it online, Thanks. Lots of pot holes so take care.
