WWFM X -- at the Tortoise and the Hare statue at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. There is a cache at this site Link: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC44Y1B However, please read below and do not look for the cache during or immediately after the event.
This event is part of WWFM-X (the tenth World-Wide Flash Mob event – see below). This and many others events around the world in their respective time zone will begin precisely at 1 pm EST on Saturday, May 4th, 2013. Those attending any of these events will receive a special WWFMX souvenir from GroundSpeak on your profile page. As some other WWFM events are involving wearing some sort of costume as a theme, feel free to do so, but it is not required. Many (though not all) events are doing a "Star Wars" theme (because of the WWFM X saying "may the Fourth be with you), you can also dress in some way related to the statues (be it a costume or just a t-shirt with a tortoise or hare or anything simply "fairy tale" related). Also feel free to just "come as you are" like many of the past WWFM events.
Like all the other ones around the world, this Flash Mob Geocache event will last exactly 15 minutes, from 1pm to 1:15pm. To claim as a "find" you must be present during this time and turn in a signed log (see "Schedule" below)!
A Flash Mob is a (hopefully) large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, then quickly disperse. These event days were initially being held twice/year, though recently they have been cut to being annually in the late spring.
As our first ever hosted Geocaching event we are looking very forward to it! While a schedule is below, you may want to plan an earlier arrival if you are driving as parking can be difficult and take some time to find (it also gives you time to look for the cache right at Ground Zero.....see below, as we do not recommend everyone looking for the cache all at once right after the event).
If you are coming from other parts of NY City, it is very subway accessible. Just take the 1 train to it's last stop (242nd Street) and walk up Broadway to the event!
SCHEDULE: 12:45 PM - 12:59 PM - Participants wait patiently and/or walk around the park. DO NOT come to the statue area until 1pm. Try as best as possible to just "blend in", do not give any hint that we will suddenly gather together. At 12:59 PM slowly begin to move to the statue area.
1:00 PM – Everyone comes together right at ground zero. Log slips will be given - please have your own pen or pencil. Sign individual log and put in the box. Then - talk/hang out, etc. just like you would at a "regular" geocaching event.
1:07-1:12 PM – We will attempt to take a group picture.
1:14 PM - We will give the warning to prepare to leave.
1:15 PM EXACTLY – Everyone leave immediately! There are many caches in this vast park, including one right at the event site (NOTE: It's a very difficult nano so please save it for later so we do not have a large group of people looking for it all at once and attract too much muggle attention! Go for some other caches and come back to it, or as noted above, come much earlier to look for it!)
This event will be held rain or shine given its short nature, so please be prepared!
Again, we are looking forward to your presence!
