George Russell Drysdale was born in Bognor Regis, Sussex, England, to an Anglo-Australian pastoralist family, whom settled in Melbourne, Australia in 1923. Drysdale was educated at Geelong Grammar School. He had poor eyesight all his life, and was virtually blind in his left eye from age 17 due to a detached retina. Russell Drysdale is an Australian artist who likes to paint his own country, his own people, and the descendants of those aborigines who inhabited Australia long before his own people came here. But like all good artists, he belongs to the world, and it was the European tradition that moulded his technique; his painting attains a universal quality through a complete artistic assimilation of its local ingredients.
