De Nieuwestraat is de moeite waard om door te lopen. laat je verbazen over de prachtige metamorfoses die de panden hebben ondergaan. Loop daarom ook eens het steegje bij de cache in.
Pietermaai Smal, eens de wijk van de Curaçaose welstand, heeft na een lange periode van leegstand en verval, de afgelopen jaren een grondige metamorfose ondergaan en is hard op weg het nieuwe ‘Quartier Latin’ van Curacao te worden.
De Nieuwestraat ligt in de wijk Pietermaai van Willemstad. Pietermaai is in de late 17de eeuw ontstaan in het gebied ten oosten van het Fort Amsterdam en De Willemstad, zoals Punda toen genoemd werd.
De wijk ontleent zijn naam aan de scheepskapitein Pieter de Meij. Na de bezetting door de Engelsen in de vroege 19de eeuw, besloot men de verdediging van het eiland te versterken. Er zou een nieuwe verdedigingslinie komen vanaf de Sint Annabaai langs de kust (het Waterfort) en vanaf het huidige Marichi tot aan het Waaigat. Wegens geldgebrek werden de plannen slechts gedeeltelijk uitgevoerd.
Aangezien daarnaast in de 19de eeuw het inzicht veld won dat ouderwetse vestingwerken niet langer bescherming konden bieden tegen vijandelijke aanvallen, ging men er in de tweede helft van de eeuw toe over de stadsmuren te slopen. Daartoe kreeg een groep Joodse kooplieden een concessie van de koloniale overheid. Met het vrijgekomen puin moest men een deel van het Waaigat dempen. Er werden ten noorden en ten oosten van de stad nieuwe bouwterreinen gewonnen, die doorliepen tot aan het huidige Julianaplein. De gronden werden geleidelijk aan bebouwd. Zo ontstond ook de bebouwing met grote villa’s tussen de stad en het oudere deel van Pietermaai. Het duurde wat langer voor men ook ten noorden van Pietermaai ging bouwen.
Laat 19de eeuwse foto’s tonen een nog goeddeels onbebouwde drooggelegde vlakte. Daar werd de Nieuwestraat aangelegd, maar op de kaart van Werbata uit 1906-1909 is te zien dat de terreinen ten noorden daarvan toen nog niet bebouwd waren.
Vanaf begin jaren 2000 is door vele kleine zelfstandigen begonnen met het restaureren van de verschillende panden. Vele stagiaires en toeristen op Curaçao vinden hier hun plekje in appartementen, maar ook voor steeds meer horeca en andere bedrijfjes. Zo ook het pand dat rond 2008/2009 een aardige metamorfose heeft ondergaan tot kapsalon Jolanda Wils.

The Nieuwestraat is located in the Pietermaai district of Willemstad. Pietermaai created in the late 17th century in the area east of Fort Amsterdam and The Willemstad, as Punda was called.
The district takes its name from the ship's captain Pieter de Meij. After the occupation by the British in the early 19th century, decided to defend the island. There would be a new defensive line coming from the St. Anna Bay along the coast (the Water Fort) and from the present Marichi to the Waaigat. This resulted in the construction of large villas between the city and the older part of Pietermaai. It took a little longer for started building north of Pietermaai.
Late 19th century photographs show a still largely undeveloped reclaimed plain. There the Nieuwestraat was constructed, but the map of Werbata from 1906-1909 shows that the areas north of it had not yet been built.
From the early 2000s many businesses started with the restoration of various buildings. Many interns and tourists in Curaçao find their place here in apartments, but also more trade and other businesses. Also the building that had a nice metamorphosis around 2008/2009 to hairdresser’s saloon Jolanda Wils.
Caution muggles. The cache is a small box and to unseen log, it is useful to take care of your footwear. Please do not put spoiler photo's.
