In December 2009 Grand Manan opened it's first indoor Skating Arena. It uses an ice freezing model of freezing the ice from the top down instead of traditional models of inground refrigeration. In my opinion this ice produced is as good as any ice made anywhere's else. Since the opening of the Arena I have had the opportunity to travel down the last 3 years for a game against the local team and can't wait to continue the tradition. This arena was also featured in a Mars commercial as they funded the building of the heated mezzanine for the spectators to watch the hockey in the environment of their choice, hot or cold.
In the last 3 years they have been able to attract more and more teams from outside Grand Manan to come and play the local teams including the NHL Legends. This past weekend they had for the first time a woman's team from Hampton travel in to play 2 games against the local women's team. The locals had 22 players suited up for those games and won the 2nd game for their first win against a mainland team. The local mens team followed that up with an overtime win for their first win as well. Great weekend of hockey was had by all and terrific turnout for the days 5 games played.
In the 3 years I've been able to come and play the continued progress of their programs is remarkable, and I have yet to not see anyone without a smile or friendly hello. The kids and adults of Grand Manan have done themselves proud and have a terrific future of new recreation opportunities. This arena is run primarily with volunteers and each of them treat it like their own. Congrats and I can't wait to the next visit!
