Cette ligne abandonnée mais non déclassée (la FNAUT a réussi à empécher RFF de le faire) est une ligne à voie unique d'une vingtaine de kilomètres avec son origine FONTOY en moselle (ligne VALENCIENNES THIONVILLE).
Construite essentiellement pour les mines de fer, elle ne doit sa survie qu'à la volonté d'une association de réaliser un tram-train sur cette portion de voie (FONTOY, BOULANGE, AUMETZ sont des villes accueillant un nombre important de transfontaliers travaillant au LUXEMBOURG).
Les CC14100 fréquentaient régulièrement la ligne. Le rail est encore présent sur l'ensemble de la ligne.
Lors de l'accident à ZOUFFGTEN entre une rame TER 2N CFL et la BB37007, la ligne THIONVILLE / LUXEMBOURG a été fermée pendant 6 jours : la SNCF a certainement regretté d'avoir abandonnée cette ligne parallèle et électrifiée en 25KV...
