Geocache Description:

The guard tower still remains of the prison called "The Work House" along what is now Kirkwood Highway in Wilmington.

This prison was the last to use the "whipping post" (last whipping was back in 1963).

The NCC Workhouse opened in 1901 on Greenbank Road, on land also currently used for athletic fields. It was the culmination of years of hard work and lobbying by groups looking to modernize Delaware's prison system. As its name would imply, the inmates at the Workhouse were required to work -- both for rehabilitation and to make the prison as financially self-sustaining as possible. Early on, a farm adjacent to the prison was acquired and worked by the inmates. Very quickly, the prison's population grew and a new farm was needed. In 1915, farmland along McKennans Church Road was purchased and christened "Delcastle Farms".

Practice "Lift, Look, Replace" - put all stones or logs back where you found them. Leave the area as you found it or better!

Do not park on Newport Gap Pike (Route 41) or Kirkwood Highway (Route 2)!  The entrance to the park is from Greenbank Road.   During warmer months, high muggle activity in park and near the cache.  Please use stealth and replace as found.   Park is open during daylight hours only.

This is a small cache.   Bring your own pen.  Container will hold small swag or trackables. Replaced 2/28/13 with a larger container. The log must be signed to claim the find.

When we hid this cache, it was partially exposed. Cachers have been adding more camo making it even more difficult to find. LOL! Thank you for the help. :)

Congratulations to Crafty SeaHorse - First to find.

Thank you to Evanspack for posting this picture of the work house.
