The Art of The Flying Fortress Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

NoPityCacher: I am archiving this cache because, while I was doing maintenance on it, I discovered that a large wasp colony has made a nest directly under the cache's resting place. I ended up with about 15 stings, which I don't want to happen to anyone else.

Geocache Description:

A nice sized cache that will take you down a wide firelane to the Wildwood foot path. There should only be one significant, short, but steep elevation change. Note: This cache complies with the geocaching policies for Portland Parks and Recreation properties. Please respect park hours when caching.

See: https://www.portland.gov/parks/geocaching-policy

Our family has hiked in this area for many years, and thought it was the perfect place for our first cache. Forest Park is one of the largest urban, forested parks in the U.S, and has over 40 miles of trails in it.

There is a pencil, a log book, and a lot of small kids toys in there. The cache is right on the trail. Hiking, but no bushwhacking required.

Please re-seal and re-hide the cache as well as you can.

We purchased the container at a military surplus and outdoors store in downtown Portland, and got a free sticker, of a WWII pinup, that we attached to the inside of the container. One of my grandfathers was a B-17 and B-29 bomber pilot in WWII and always had some great stories to tell when I was growing up. The sticker reminded me of him and his many exploits in the South Pacific, hence the name of the cache.

Although this was original intended to be the first cache we placed, Forest Park has so many cache's that I placed this cache, and had to move it twice. I finally ended up sending out a list of 6 spread out coordinates along various paths that I just picked off the geo-caching map, to get confirmation that one of them had about 50-100 feet of leeway for a cache placement. EarthNinja and I hicked out to the location site unseen, and amazingly enough there was a pretty good spot, almost right at the coordinates, so there it rests.

Congratulations to eyekwilt2 for the {*FTF*}!! And as she points out, this cache is only just off the trail.
