Geocache Description:

A traditional cache with fun trade items for the kids on the edge of Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge.  Watch for some of the many different types of waterfowl and mammals that make the refuge their home at varied times throughout the year.

My father's side of the family (great-grandparents Ren & Laura Olsen and grandparents Lester & Blanche Olsen) farmed in the greater Charlo, MT area.  There are many other Aunts, Uncles and cousins that still live near Charlo today.  There is also now a road in that area that I'd like to think is named after them.  Take this road "Olsen Road" (my maiden name) off of US Hwy 93 to the cache location.  This is such a beautiful area with the refuge, reservoir and Mission Mountain views, that I wanted to place a cache nearby.

The Refuge consists of 390 acres of upland habitat.  Keep an eye out for the many varied waterfowl and animals that call the refuge home.

  • The wetland habitat supports abundant waterfowl species such as mallards, northern shovelers, gadwalls, redheads and   ruddy ducks.

  • It has become an important breeding and staging area for a large portion of the Flathead Valley Canada goose population.

  • Red-necked grebes nest on the refuge, and the refuge also contains the Valley's only nesting western grebe colony.

  • Other birds include song sparrows, yellow headed and red winged blackbirds, and ring necked pheasants.

  • American bitterns and sora rails can often be seen and heard.

  • Osprey nest on platforms on the south shore of the refuge.

  • There is an active rookery of great blue herons and double crested cormorants.

  • Grizzly bears will sometimes move down from the Mission Mountains to forage on the refuge.

  • Common mammals include muskrat, striped skunk, mink, badgers, field mice, meadow voles and porcupines.

  • Sportfish include yellow perch and largemouth bass.

This cache is placed on the county road right-away. There is ample room to pull to the side and off the road to safely look for this cache.  Please take care to close the cache lid correctly and conceal it as well or better than you found it.  There is a FTF prize in the baggie with the log book.
