Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed in 2013 as part of the Washington State Parks Centennial GeoTour - "100 caches in 100 parks to celebrate 100 years" - cosponsored by Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA). As with any cache, bring your own pen, pencil, or stamp.

Ike Kinswa State Park is a 454 acre camping and boating park with 46,000 feet of fresh water shoreline located on the north side of Mayfield Lake. The park is located on the shores of a peninsula between the Cowlitz River and the Tilton River. The campsites are forested and available year round. Along with the 1.5 miles of hiking trails within the park it also provides good fishing as well as recreation boating along with areas for swimming and children's play. Watercraft have a boat launch area with a 40 ft. dock and paved parking. Also there are 52 unsheltered picnic tables available on a first come, first served basis.

For many years the area around Ike Kinswa St Pk has been inhabited by the Cowlitz Indians and their burial grounds are located within the region. Some of those graves were relocated to higher areas when the Mayfield dam backed water up into the canyon. While the area was originally named Mayfield Lake State Park it was changed in 1971 to honor Ike Kinswa, a Cowlitz Indian who represented his people, living near here in the late 1800s.

Your trip to the cache starts near the picnic area along a wide flat path that many years ago was a logging road. The trail is never far from the lake and side trails take off leading inland and down to the lake, offering further places to explore. Tall alders and maples, some over 100 feet high, shade the trail year round so expect some wet patches as you head north to the cache. But look up as well. Those with a careful eye may spot some of the eagles that nest near here during the winter months.

Park hours:
The park is open year-round for camping or day use.
Summer day use: 6:30 a.m. to dusk.
Winter day use: 8 a.m. to dusk.
