Bridge Series: Fort Garry Traditional Cache
Stonagal: Picked this one up tonight. It was actually in better shape than I was expecting. Thanks to all who found this one! GZ was my third attempt at a spot - and in the process I got some puzzle coordinates to a tough solve.

The Fort Garry Bridge (to the east) opened in 1978. It was built over the Red River to connect the city wards of St. Vital on the east side, with Fort Garry on the west. The Fort Garry ward takes its name from the historic forts near The Forks that were early settlements in the area that became Winnipeg. The bridge is the southernmost crossing of the Red River inside the City of Winnipeg’s perimeter.
The Fort Garry Bridge is one section of Bishop Grandin Boulevard, named for an early Christian missionary in the area. At the time it was constructed, Bishop Grandin Boulevard was an expressway connecting Lagimodiere Boulevard (PTH 59) with Pembina Highway (PTH 75). It now extends all the way west to Kenaston Boulevard. It was originally conceived as being part of an “inner ring” beltway for Winnipeg, similar in function to the Perimeter Highway.
The bridge and the boulevard are oriented in a southwest-northeasterly direction. This orientation is consistent with that of the South Perimeter Highway. The reason these roads are oriented like this, rather than true east-west, is because of the Red River Floodway to the south. The man-made river carrying the Red’s excess water flows northeast around the City of Winnipeg, rejoining the Red River at Lockport, Manitoba. The South Perimeter changes direction at Waverley Street to reflect this reality, and Bishop Grandin follows accordingly.
Near the east end of the bridge, you can read about the Greater Winnipeg Water District Second Branch Aqueduct, which brings water to Winnipeg from the Lake of the Woods area.
Congratulations to JB. for the second of four FTFs in the series!
