Geocache Description:

There are certain places of beauty hidden in the small corners of our world. Special places. Places that are too beautiful not to share. Rhodes Pond is one of those places and what better way to start experiencing the blossoms of spring 2013 than to paddle the calm waters of Rhodes Pond to the Black River Swamp and head waters amongst the majestic cyrpress trees and communities of beavers. Hydrophila will grace your strokes as you paddle back in time to what the wetlands once looked like. There will also be more caches out here to find for your smiley pleasure!

When? Saturday, April 6th, 2013
Time? We can shoot for a 10:00am meet time and 10:30 launch time.
Where? At the launch ramp of Rhodes Pond (the coords!)

What if I don't have a boat? There are a number of ways, if you can borrow one from someone who will be there or rent one from any number of places. (I am working on getting a head count of those who will commit to attending who don't have a boat and hopefully work out a deal with local place in Lillington to be there and rent out canoes and kayaks - if enough people commit, it would be worth them to come out and rent - as more information is available, will post)

How long? Probably half-day - about 4 hours. The intention is to paddle across the pond, and into the Black River Swamp area amongst the cypress and find the head waters to the Black River - currently there are two paddle caches (as of this posting) and hope to place more.

How hard? Paddling is easy to learn! With decent weather conditions and enough water - the swamp is a classic blackwater paddle - even if it is your first ever paddle - once you have 10 mins on the open water, you will use your new found paddle skills to navigate through the cyrpess trees and work your way around natural obstacles. You won't even notice as you will be in awe of the natural beauty of this treasure. Not to worry, there will be plenty of experienced paddlers there to help if you never did this before.

What to bring? Your sense of adventure, a camera, your family, snacks and water. Again a kayak or canoe will be helpful
