小平市は、昭和43年10月1日の姿勢施行記念日に、市の木として「けやき」を、市の花として「つつじ」を決定しました。
現在、小平市の保存樹林は1900本ありますが、その70%がケヤキの木です。
小平市にあるケヤキの木の中で大きくてまっすぐに伸びているものとして、この竹内家の大けやきが、小平市の天然記念物の第一号として認定されました。
このけやきの木は、竹内家がこの場所に移り住んだ江戸時代の寛文年間（1661～1671）に、春の赤風と秋の台風に備えて植樹された樹木の中の一本で、樹齢は300年以上といわれています。

面積 400平方メートル
