Celebrating 2,000,000 Active Geocaches!

At the publishing of this event, there was 1,999,500 active geocaches. By the time this event happens, there will be over 2,000,000 active geocaches. Lets celebrate with some ice cream!

The first geocache was placed in March 2000. When geocaching.com launched in September, 2000, they had all of 75 known geocaches listed. By 2008 there was about half a million geocaches. Just over two years later, in March of 2010 we topped a million geocaches, and now three years later we have expanded by another full million. Ten years to reach the first million, and only three to double it. How many ten years from now?

The 2 millionth active geocache was published on February 28 at approximately 5:11am Seattle time. It’s located in Australia. The 2 millionth active geocache is Overwatch #1 (GC46N4E). The traditional geocache is rated a terrain 3.5, difficulty 3.5 and promises to take geocachers to a lookout over the city of Alice Springs.

This event will be a drop in event. Come and go as you please, but be sure to get some ice cream and make the employees happy. I'll have some fun things to do as well. Let me know if you are coming so I'll have an idea of how many people to expect.
