Drewniany kościół w Jeleniewie, pod wezwaniem Najświętszego Serca Jezusowego jest niecodzienną budowlą sakralną z dwóch powodów. Z jednej strony to jedyny zabytek sakralny tej klasy na Suwalszczyźnie - zbudowany w stylu neogotyckim w roku 1878 - z drugiej to swego rodzaju chiropterologiczne centrum na mapie Polski. W jednej z wież kościoła ma bowiem swą kolonię rozrodczą - liczącą 400 do 500 samic - jedna z dwóch największych grup nocka łydkowłosego (Myotis dasycneme) w Polsce. To rzadki i zagrożony ssak z rzędu nietoperzy. Nocek łydkowlosy lubi krajobraz otwarty, z dużą ilością zbiorników i cieków wodnych. Żeruje nad powierzchnią wody, chwytając chrząszcze, komary, chruściki i inne owady, za pomocą dużych stóp, w skrzydła lub w błonę ogonową. Nieopodal Jeleniewa w okolicach Turtula Czarna Hańcza spowalnia swój bieg, tworząc idealne żerowisko dla mieszkańców kościelnej wieży.
 

Jeleniewo, snowy weather...
The wooden church in Jeleniewo, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is a special sacred building. On the one hand it is the only sacred monument of this architectural class in the Suwałki region - built in neo-Gothic style in 1878 - on the other it is a special place on the chiropterological map of Poland. In one of the two towers lives one of the biggest colony - 400 to 500 females - of the pond bat (Myotis dasycneme) in Poland. Pond bats are rare and endangered in Poland. They like an open landscapes, with plenty of water bodies and hunt near the surface of the water; catching beetles, mosquitoes, flies and other insects. Pond bats catch them with their large feets, wings or tail membrane.
 

Die Kirche befindet sich im Zentrum des Dorfes. Neben Besucherinformationen gibt es hier auch ein naturwissenschaftliches Informationsschild mit Informationen über den Ort und seine Besonderheiten. In der Nähe findet man einen zentralen Platz und gleichzeitig eine Parkanlage, die recht selten für so kleine Ortschaften ist. Zu den regionalen Besonderheiten der Umgebung gehören neben den sanften Hügeln - besonders im Westen des Gebiets) und den hübsch anzusehenden, dank der verbindenden Wasserwege sehr besucherfreundlichen Seen auch das Gebäude der ehemalige Glashütte.
