Sijoitathan kätkön sivullisille näkymättömällä tavalla takaisin paikoilleen. * * * * * * [ENG] Ages ago forgotten firestation - traditional cache in a historical environment on the island of Varjakka. Please, return the cache container in such a way that it will not be visible to outsiders.
[FIN] Varjakan saha oli Varjakansaarella Oulunsalon Varjakassa vuosina 1900–1929 toiminut sahalaitos, joka oli aikanaan Pohjoismaiden suurin. Sahan rakennutti vuonna 1898 perustettu Varjakka Trävaru Aktiebolaget. Vuonna 1912 saha siirtyi vastaperustetun Ab Uleå Oy:n hallintaan. Enimmillään sahan palveluksessa oli noin 700 henkilöä. Varjakan saarella oli sahan pääkonttori, työntekijöiden asuntoja, ruokala, kaksi kauppaa, elokuvateatteri ja oma palokunta sekä kapearaiteinen rautatie sahalta saaren länsipään satamaan. Varjakan saarelta päästiin mantereelle Hulinaksi ristityn kapulalossin avulla. Saha paloi vuonna 1919, mutta se rakennettiin uudelleen entistä suurempana. Vuonna 1929 sahan pääakseli katkesi, ja koska sahatavaran menekki oli sillä hetkellä heikentynyt, ei sahan omistanut Uleå-yhtiö ryhtynyt kalliisiin korjaustöihin, vaan lopetti laitoksen toiminnan. Sahan laitteet siirrettiin yhtiön Pateniemen sahalle (mantereelle Oulun pohjoispuolelle) ja saharakennus purettiin Oulu Oy:n Nuottasaaren tehtaan rakennustarvikkeiksi.(Lähde: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varjakan_saha ) Saaren rakennuksista on jäljellä alun toistakymmentä, useimmat näistä jo melko huonokuntoisia, mutta itäpäässä sijaitseva pääkonttori-rakennus sekä yksi paritalo on kunnostettu. Saarelle pääsee helpoimmin talvella, parin sadan metrin levyisen jäätyneen salmen ylitse. Huomioi kuitenkin että toisinaan vettä nousee jään päälle, joten mikäli olet jalkaisin liikkeellä niin vedenpitävät jalkineet ovat suositeltavia. Jääreitin kuntoa ei valvota, kulku tapahtuu omalla harkinnalla ja vastuulla. Sulan veden aikaan saarelle pääsee myös Varjakan venesatamasta kapulalossilla. kapulalossin avaimet saa Warjakan Bar&Grillistä. Avaimet noudetaan Warjakan Bar&Grillistä osoitteesta Muikuntie 2, 90470 Oulunsalo. * * * * * * [ENG] The sawmill of Varjakka was located on the island of Varjakka, Oulunsalo. It was operational between 1900 – 1929, and during that period it was the biggest sawmill of the Nordic countries. This sawmill was built by the “Varjakka Trävaru Aktiebolaget”, founded by 1898. By 1912 this sawmill was turned over to a newly formed company “Ab Uleå Oy”. During the peak seasons of this sawmill, there were even 700 employees. On the island were located the head office of the sawmill company, several apartments for the employees, a canteen, two stores, a movie theatre, a firestation and a narrow railroad from the sawmill area to the harbour on the western side of the island. The connection to the mainland was provided by a small manually operated ferry. The sawmill was burned in 1919, but it was soon rebuilt, and even larger than previously. In 1929 the main shaft of the sawmill was broken, and because of the decreased sales of the timber by that time, the Uleå-company decided to shut down this sawmill. The equipments of the sawmill were transferred to sawmill of Pateniemi (to the mainland, on northern side of the city of Oulu) and the sawmill buildings were disassembled and transferred to Nuottasaari, a factory area of the Uleå-company. (source, in finnish: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varjakan_saha ) About a dozen of the buildings of this sawmill community still exist on the island, most of them are decayed, but a couple of the buildings on the eastern side of the island have been refurbished. The easiest period to access this island is the wintertime, when the narrow strait (about 200 meters) is frozen. If you are moving by foot, be aware that there is sometimes a layer of water on top of the ice, so the waterproof shoes are recommended. The condition of this iceroute is not (officially) monitored, so you can use it on your own risk and consideration. During the open water, a manually movable small ferry is available.
