Geocache Description:

Take a stroll along the English Riviera

This is a series of caches replacing the "Welcome to the English Riviera" series, designed to take you on a stroll along the shoreline of this town i call home.

Situated on Torquay's seafront Torre Abbey Meadow was once part of the vast Cary estate and incorperates all the land from the Recreation Ground across to Belgrave Road including the tennis courts, pitch and putt course and Abbey Gardens.
Torre Abbey was founded in 1196 and then bought by Sir george Cary in 1662. The barn to the left of the Abbey (looking from the seaward side) is the Spanish Barn, where 397 prisoners of war from the Spanish Armada, and is reputed to be haunted by a young maiden who, not wanting to be seperated from her love, had diguised herself as a boy and snook aboard the ship he was on.
In the middle of the meadow stands a majestic oak tree, which is thought to be over 450 years old, it is now surrounded by a wooden fence and bark chippings in an attempt to protect its roots.
