COE Bobber #4 is the fourth in a series of six geocachers at various lakes in the Corps of Engineers Albuquerque District. Bobber the Water Safety Dog is the Corps of Engineers Water Safety Program mascot. He appears in our water safety activity book which has lots of puzzles and mazes to do. If you would like a book you can contact the folks in the Corps of Engineers administration office between 7:30 AM-4:00 PM, Monday-Friday or a ranger on patrol. Bobber says, “Please be water safe in and around the water by wearing your lifejacket.” Life jackets are important even in the winter months when New Mexico has lost visitors on occasion to hypothermia. Bobber hopes you will always swim with a friend and never swim alone. The Corps of Engineers invites you to explore and enjoy the many recreational opportunities that Abiquiu Lake have to offer, such as fishing, picnicking, camping, hiking, wildlife watching, boating and water sports. We invite you to stop by our visitor center in the Administration office located just northeast of the dam off Highway 96. Abiquiu Lake (pronounced a-bi-kew) is the Albuquerque District’s northern most flood control reservoir in the state of New Mexico, or as the locals call it- Tierra Encantada- The Land of Enchantment. Abiquiu and the Piedre Lumbre region (Spanish for shining stone) are historically and culturally significant. Today, the terrain and cultural mix epitomized at Abiquiu, varies only slightly from what the early inhabitants experienced. Abiquiu Lake is part of a comprehensive plan for flood and sediment control in the Rio Chama-Rio Grande River Basin. The project was authorized Congress in the Flood Control Act of 1948. Construction began in 1956 and was completed in 1963. Originally, flood control at Abiquiu Dam involved the temporary capture of water during peak drainage seasons; slowly releasing it at a predictable rate. It was not until 1986 the Abiquiu Lake took on a new roll (water storage), when the Corps entered into a water supply contract with the City of Albuquerque.
