Geocache Description:

Saturday, May 4th 9 AM

Galena Regional Park
18250 Mount Rose Highway
Reno, NV 89511

When you are ascending Mt. Rose highway, look for the entrance to the visitor's center on the right approximately one mile from where the road narrows from four lanes to two.

Are you looking for an activity that will:

  • Be fun for the whole family
  • Help you get some exercise
  • Be available all year long
  • Be inexpensive
  • Take you to neat places you never knew existed
Then Geocaching may be the activity for you. Geocaching was invented 13 years ago when the military made a change in the Global Positioning System (GPS) that allowed civilians to get accurate information from their system. It has been described as "High Tech Treasure Hunting." There are now over 2 Million active geocaches in the world and more than 1000 within 20 miles of Reno. They range from easy finds that you can drive to in the city to caches placed under water or in the middle of a climbing cliff. The terrain and difficulty varies from easy to extremely difficult. You may pick your level of adventure.

All that is required to geocache is a GPS reciever. Most smart-phones already have a GPS reciever built in and that may be all you need. Others will prefer to get a dedicated hand-held GPS reciever costing $100 - $500. Either choice will do the job. Besides that you just need a means of transportation (Many are within walking distance of your home) and a sense of adventure.

This event will teach you the basics of Geocaching. We will provide you with a loaner GPS reciever and a "Geocaching savy guide." There will be several easy learning geocaches and a bunch of real geocaches for you to find. You will leave with the knowledge you need to start the sport.

Experienced cachers- We need your help with this one. Please indicate in your "Will Attend" log if you can help lead a small group.
