Number five in our Australia series....
Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern territory in central Australia. It lies 335 km (208 mi)
south west of the nearest large town, Alice Springs, 450km (280 mi) by road. Kata Tjuta and Uluru are the two major features of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Uluru is sacred to the Anangu, the Aboriginal people of the area. The area around the formation is home to a plethora of springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings. Uluru is listed as a World Heritage Site.
The local Anangu do not climb Uluru because of its great spiritual signifignance. They request that visitors do not climb the rock, partly due to the path crossing a sacred traditional Dreamtime track, and also due to a sense of responsibility for the safety of visitors. The visitors guide says "the climb is not prohibited, but we prefer that, as a guest on Anangu land, you will choose to respect our law and culture by not climbing."
This huge rock rises 348 m, and more and more of its height is visible as the sand blows away from the desert plain around it. It is 3.6 km long and 2.4 km across, and about two-thirds is still below the sand.
