Geocache Description:

Selja kloster er den største severdigheten i Selje kommune. Hit kan du i sommermånedene komme med Klosterbåten fra Selje sentrum.

Selja monastary is the main attraction in Selje. During the summer months you can reach the monastary by means of the Klosterbåten - a boat that leaves Selje a few times daily.



Historien om Selja og klosteret her henger nøye sammen med legenda om Sankta Sunniva (GC46W8A) . Selja var bispesete for området fra Sunnmøre til Agder fra ca. 1070 e.Kr. Tidlig på 1100-tallet blei benediktinerklosteret bygget, og det var munker her så seint som i 1525.

Klosterområdet er et freda kulturminne. Det er ikke lov å klatre/gå på murene!

Sankta Sunnivas dag (Seljumannamesse) feires 8. juli. Hvert år markeres dagen i Selje med en utendørsgudstjeneste her i Selja kloster søndagen nærmest 8. juli.

The history of the Selja island and the monastery here is closely related to the legend of Sta. Sunniva (GC46W8A). The monastery was built in the early 1100s and monks remained here as late as 1525.

The area of the monastery ruins is a cultural heritage and is under conservation laws.
It is not allowed to climb or walk on the ruin walls!

Sta. Sunniva is celebrated on July 8th. In Selje every year an outdoor ceremony in Selja monastery is held on the Sunday closest to this date.
