Geocache Description:

Welcome to Cranleigh. This is a short and simple offset multi cache located at a little known historical area. Enjoy!

Cranleigh in the Canberra suburb of Latham. The area is located to the Northwest of the intersection of Southern Cross and Kingsford Smith Drives. Today the open space and the rows of pine trees confer a sense of stateliness and tranquillity even though it is surrounded on two sides by major trunk routes linking the city to the northern suburbs of Canberra.

A part of Canberra’s open space urban system it confers a sense of place as the area where one of Australia’s important military leaders resided. The park is dominated by pine trees planted by Lieutenant-General Legge after his retirement from the Australian Army.

Legge planted the trees to surround his homestead and orchard grounds which stood approximately in the centre of the existing park. The Legge homestead was located approximately in the centre of the existing park. He also raised pigs and horses and cultivated potatoes in the area. Legge lived in the homestead until ill health forced him to leave and the house was dismantled, leaving only the foundations. These were later removed by the then National Capital Development Commission.

The blocks have a low sand to cement ratio (compared to modern concrete) and medium to large gravel pieces. The blocks some 40 metres from the approximate site of the former Legge homestead and whether they were part of the foundations of the homestead is unknown. Sadly, this serene area of parkland is proposed for future development.
