Geocache Description:

Congratulations to lazeedaydream for the FTF.

You will need to bring your own pen. Location has moved slightly to original hiding spot but still within coordinates.

Buck wood and the neighbouring woods are beautiful woodlands on the side of the Leeds Liverpool canal.  I have decided to place a series of 6 caches along a lovely 3 mile walk taking in the sights and sounds of the woods.
There are a few other caches in the woods already so be sure to have a scout around for those too whilst you are out and about.  I would suggest that you allow a good 2 hours for this walk, that’s taking into consideration time spent looking for the caches and soaking up the surroundings.  After rain some of the wood can be very muddy so welly bobs or boots are advisable.

The third cache on this walk is in the lower part of Buck Wood and entering Field Wood.  Be sure to check out the view a cross the valley from the clearing before returning back into the cover of the trees for this cache.

Buck Wood lies to the north of Thackley in North Bradford.  The Wood covers an area of fairly level high ground as well as the steep north-facing slope down to the Leeds-Liverpool canal.  The canal here follows the course of the River Aire round a distinct bend as it flows eastwards, and above this valley Buck Wood forms a broad semi-circular zone of woodland, adjoining other similar woods which are part of a woodland corridor stretching along the Aire Valley.

Covering 42 hectares, Buck Wood is bordered by the curving route of the canal at its lower perimeter, which is around 60m above sea level.  Its highest boundary, 135m above sea level, is shaped by the stately tree-lined sweep of Ainsbury Avenue which leads from Thackley to Esholt.

Thackley itself forms the southern boundary of the Wood, and at the northern edge is Field Wood and land now belonging to Yorkshire Water.  Between the canal and the river, below the south-eastern corner of Buck Wood, the area covered by the Friends of Buck Wood extends to take in the remains of Buck Mill, which was vital to the history of the wood.

The Friends of Buck Wood group was established in March 2004, and includes local residents and other users of the wood.  The group aims to protect and improve Buck Wood, Thackley, for the benefit of the wildlife and environment, and for the people of the surrounding area.  They work in partnership with the owners of the Wood, Bradford Council.

Information kindly supplied by the ‘Friends of Buck Wood’.
