Geocache Description:

Hiking along the gated section of the Old Ridge Route...entering the Ridge Route from Hwy 138 and driving until you reach the Historical Monument of the "Old Tumble Inn" at N 34 42.471 W 118 43.300. You can park here and start hiking down the road...bring some water, a hat, and a good pair of shoes...enjoy the hike & caches. You are looking for a small cammo'd plastic container.

The Ridge Route opened in 1915 and 17.6 miles of the road in the Angeles National Forest were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Official limits of the Ridge Route were State Route 126 at Castaic Junction and the bottom of the Grapevine. There used to be dozens of inns, cafes, and services along this road but what is left of most of them are some historical markers and remnants of buildings. Historians have noted that the construction of this road through the mountains, linking northern California and southern California, may have saved California from splitting into two states. There's a locked gate just north of Templin Hwy and a locked gate at the Old Tumble Inn site as you travel the Ridge Route south off of Hwy 138.There's a news page link on the www.RidgeRoute.com home page...updated Feb. 8, 2013 for road status & info...and the news dated Dec. 6, 2012 states that you are allowed to walk, hike, or bicycle past the gate; just no motorized vehicles. On the 2nd Saturday of each month, there is a volunteer work party that cleans-up the Ridge Route. Volunteers meet at the Ranch House Restaurant in Gorman no later than 9am to depart to the north entrance to clean drains and remove vegetation, rocks, and debris from the road...and generally work until 2:30 or 3pm. Reservoir Summit (ele 3,883) is the high point along the gated section of the Ridge Route. There are phone numbers and other links & info on the website.
