Geocache Description:

A drive to the top of the Saddle Mountains and the top of the Sentinel Gap for some amazing views of the Columbia River and to find a cache!

If you like a drive on scenic mountain roads to find a cache, then this one is for you. This is a small, camoed peanut butter jar hidden on BLM land at the top of Sentinel Gap. The road to the cache is a gravel road the whole way and is good enough for a family sedan. You can drive within 200 feet of the cache. Drive carefully since it is a primitive road and sharp turns are not marked. There are also a lot of dirt bikes and ATVs since ORV use is allowed on the BLM land. In warm weather, watch for snakes!

It has taken us a while to figure out how to get to the top, so directions are as follows:

Start in the town of Mattawa. Travel east out of Mattawa on Rd 24 for about 1 mile to Rd. R and turn left towards Saddle Mountain. Once on Rd R, it is about 6.5 miles to the cache. Go 1 mile north until you cross a canal. The road will split and you will go on the left road (and stay left of a fence that runs along the road). In another mile or so, you will pass under power lines and the road will turn sharply west and drop into a deep ravine and climb out the other side. You will then go through a cattle gate which is the beginning of the BLM land. There is a sign near the gate detailing ORV use of the land. You will be on BLM land the rest of the way. Stay on the gravel roads and do not turn on to any dirt roads. When in doubt, take the obvious best gravel road. There are three places the road splits on the BLM land that may be confusing, so here are coordinates and descriptions: 1st Turn (46 47.827, 119 53.356), turn left (away from the power lines). 2nd turn (46 47.590, 119 53.793), turn right (uphill). 3rd turn (46 47.901, 119 54.143), at top of ridgeline where you will turn sharply left (west).

Congratulations to Mr. Gadget #2 for the FTF!

*As noted by Mr. Gadget #2 in his log, there is a benchmark nearby to be found. Thanks Mr. G for pointing it out!
