Geocache Description:

Take a stroll along the English Riviera

This is a series of caches replacing the "Welcome to the English Riviera" series, designed to take you on a stroll along the shoreline of this town i call home. Situated on the eastern end of Torquays main seafront is a little piece of land known as "Old Maids Perch", at the moment i am struggling to find out the what's and why's as to how this area got its name, there is however a plaque at GZ denoting that the area was refurbished in 1992, with the assistance of the  "Torquay Centenary Commitee" to commemorate Torquay becoming a borough. Along with the many benches to be able to sit and enjoy the stunning view across Torbay the area is planted with many varieties of exhotic plants including Jelly Palms, Pheonix Palms and agaves. The bridge across the road  joining Old Maids Perch to Torre Abbey Sands was constructed in May 1971, with the main section being put into place over night on the 18th. Designed by Butterley Engineering Co. Ltd. of Derby it cost £32,500, of which £25,000 was funded by a government grant. It arrived in Torquay in 4 sections, 3 making up the spiral ramp on the seaward side, and the main section crossing the road, which weighed in at a staggering 19 tons and had to be transported on a special lorry with steering both fore and aft. The bridge was opened on 14th June 1971. The beach, Torre Abbey Sands, is Torquay's main beach, it is relatively shallow which makes it a safe bathing area, with fairly fine sand which can be covered on high tides. It was once voted "King of the Sandcastles" by scientists at Bournemouth University, apparently having the perfect mix of sand/water (8 parts water to 1 part sand) Bring your own pen, tweezers will help as well. Or make use of the improved/improvised log extractor device!
