This is a series of caches replacing the "Welcome to the English Riviera" series, designed to take you on a stroll along the shoreline of this town i call home. Originally known as the Fishermans Walk, Rock Walk or Royal Terrace Gardens to give it its official name was created in the early 1890's, opening in 1893. Until around the 1890's all of the land at the base of rock walk ( known as Princess Gardens ), was mainly marshland and the sea came right up to the base of the cliffs. In fact on 2nd January 1873 the Boston based ship "Wallace" ran aground next to what is now the Torbay Hotel, the wreck caught fire and burned for 2 whole days. About halfway along Rock Walk towards the Torre Abbey end you will notice a change in the rock formation from Devonian limestone on the Rock Walk side to Red sandstone on the Torre Abbey side, this is the Sticklepath Fault line. The fault line runs from Barnstaple to Torbay, coming down Belgrave Road, emerging at Rock Walk before running out into Torbay and has resulted in infrequent mild earthquakes the last of which was felt in the 1990's. In 2007 Rock Walk was closed to the public for a £3 million revamp, partly due to some rock falls, but also an increase in anti-social behaviour in the area. Most of the original trees and plants were cleared (more than 300 tonnes, most of which was recycled as "mulch") and replaced. The original wooden walkways were taken away and replaced with stone ones which follow an identical path to the originals. At the top is a viewing platform which affords spectacular views across Princess Gardens, the harbour and out to sea to the east, across the Bay to Brixham looking south or Torre Abbey Meadows and Paignton to the west.
