Saint Mary and All Saints Church, Hawksworth
This Church is part of the Cranmer Group of parishes, which includes Scarrington, Orston, Whatton, Hawksworth, Aslockton, Thoroton (hence sometimes known as the SO WHAT group!). Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury at the time of the Reformation and author of the Book of Common Prayer, was born in Aslockton and worshipped at Whatton (where his father is buried).
The Church, dedicated to St. Mary and All Saints, is Early English, and has a nave, with clerestory, massive western tower, and chancel; rebuilt in 1851. There is a dedication stone and the remains of a churchyard cross.
There is also an interesting tympanum, but not in its original site, which appears to have been over the western doorway of the tower. The word "ecclesiam" would seem to have been tampered with, as it reads ECMESIAM.

The nature of Churches generally means that they are close to other properties and unnoticed access can often be difficult. I have therefore placed Geocaches in places that afford easy access, but you may occasionally feel overlooked. I hope that you find the caches in good order and are able to enjoy the series.
