Geocache Description:

In the year 1301, King Richard I was preparing for battle with Scotland. He demanded that all prominent harbour towns produced 2 ships for the campaign. When it came to Youghal, 3 ships were required. This indicated the importance of Youghal Port at that time, second only to Bristol throughout the British Isles.

400 years previously, there was no Green's Quay. Although in the 700s Youghal was the main port for the Viking attacks on Christian monasteries along the south coast of Ireland, it was not until the great storm of 830 that the course of the mighty River Blackwater changed course. Prior to this, the Blackwater entered the sea at Whiting Bay, near Ardmore. After the storm, the river changed course, and the present Blackwater Estuary came into being. Green's Quay then became the main quay of the main harbour of the country.

The cache is a micro, placed close to Youghal Shipping Yard.

For reasons unknown, much of the foreshore of Youghal harbour has been ceded to private interests since 2000, and access to the quayside in the area alongside the cache is often forbidden. The cache site is always accessible.
