The old school at Dungeness stood isolated among acres of shingle for around 64years.The school was founded C1876 when a plot of land was given to the Vicar and churchwardens of Lydd for a church school to be built here, it was taken over in 1906 by Kent education committee. The school was the heart of the fishing community, being used for teaching the children but also for adults to worship here,( the east window being curtained off, behind this curatin was the altar and altar rail.)People also used it for parties, celebrations and whisk drives. The only time it closed was in April 1896 due to a measles outbreak. During WW2 Dungeness was declared a no go area and most of the children were evacuated, mostly to Cuckfield in Sussex after the school had closed. When victory was declared in 1945 it was decided not to reopen the school and over the years the weather and vandalism took its toll. All that remains now are broken bricks and stones, some floor tiles and concrete bases. This is a list of the head teachers over the years. Miss Richards 1883-1885. Miss Bowrick 1885-1889 Miss Stevens 1889-1890 Miss Abernethy 1890-1892.. Miss Marsh 1892-1908 Miss Fox 1908- 1925. she became Mrs stevenson when she married the landlord of The George Hotel In Lydd.
