The Hydroplane Races
(The Old)
Hydroplanes have been racing in the river in front of Columbia Park each summer since 1966. The hydroplane racing is held at the end of July and is probably the biggest annual event in the Tri-Cities.
The park entrance off of Highway 240 has had a hydroplane at the entrance since the first race. A 1955-vintage hydroplane named Miss Tri-Cities mounted on the present pole without its behemoth24-cylinder Allison engine. The rare 2,600 horsepower Allison engine was sent to the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Miss Tri-Cities was used as the landmark for 26 years until the wooden hull on the boat suffered from excessive rot and was taken down in 1993. In 1998, a group of volunteers built the U-98 which is the current hydroplane mounted on the pole. As a tribute, the driver of the boat was designated as Keith Bowers who was one of five founding fathers that brought unlimited hydroplane racing to the Tri-Cities. In 2006, volunteers repaired weather damage to the boat and gave it a new coat of paint.
