Geo-Chicks Rock! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

IthacaDoodle: Out today for what is probably one of the season's last XC skis. Never a good sign when you can't find your own cache - archiving this one on its one-year anniversary. The only folks who skied by me while I was digging around turned out to be letterboxers, so all was good.

Geocache Description:

Cache is a bison tube with 'natural' camo right on the Y1 (Yellow 1) branch of the Hammond Hill State Forest Multiple Use Trail System.

I remember finding those Geo-Chick buttons when I first started caching and it was a treat to finally meet both Geo-Chicks in person. After enjoying some winter caching in the Adirondacks recently as an honorary Geo-Chick, I was inspired to add more caches near where I had my first winter caching experience (a DNF at Mother's Day on Hammond Hill).

This cache is to encourage Geo-Chicks and all others to take advantage of cross-country skiing here at Hammond Hill. My favorite time to visit Hammond Hill is in the winter for cross-country skiing and this spot is right on the Y1 (Yellow 1) loop of the Hammond Hill State Forest Multiple Use Trail System.

Trail Map: (visit link)

Hammond Hill State Forest encompasses 3,618 acres previously cleared of trees for agriculture during the mid to late nineteenth century. Between 1935 and 1940, 708,000 pine, spruce, large, sugar maple, white ash, and red oak were planted by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Now, the 19-mile Hammond Hill State Forest Multiple Use Trail System is designed to offer family-based recreation for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.

***Parking lot on Hammond Hill Road, or curbside on Star Stanton Hill Road. You will be able to get closer in the summer when the snowmobile trails revert to seasonal roads. If you do come when there is snow cover, and are not skiing, please be sure to observe the rules, especially: Do not hike or bike in the ski tracks!***
