Met STIP op de kaart ... Beerst Traditional Cache

Op landkaarten wordt de positie van een plaats vaak aangegeven met een kleine cirkel. Bij grotere plaatsen worden de contouren van zo'n plaats weergegeven.
Geocaching.com maakt gebruik van OpenStreetMap en Google maps.
Hierbij kun je zoeken naar coördinaten, een straatnaam, plaatsnaam en zelfs een land. Geef je bij Google maps, Google Earth of GPScoordinaten.nl een plaatsnaam in en ga je hierna inzoomen dan zal bij Google maps eerst de plaatsnaam zichtbaar zijn, maar bij verder inzoomen verdwijnt deze.
Bij Google Earth en GPScoordinaten.nl gebeurt dit niet. Alle drie hebben gemeen dat je op dezelfde positie in een plaats uitkomt. Wij noemen dit daarom dus: ‘het middelpunt’.

Wanneer je echter België ingevoerd bij bovengenoemde kaartprogramma's dan kom je uit tussen Chaussée en Mellet (Rue du Mitan) en niet nabij Nil-Saint-Vincent, waar het geografische middelpunt van België zou liggen.

Het zou leuk zijn als dit initiatief navolging krijgt in andere plaatsen. Verstop dan een cache zo dicht mogelijk bij het ‘middelpunt’ en maak, indien nodig, via een verwijzing of foto kenbaar waar het echte middelpunt ligt. Hierbij kunnen we even vooruit. Volgens Wikipedia zijn er in België op dit moment 589 gemeenten.

Geocaching.com uses the Openstreetmaps or Google Maps.
You have the possibility to look for coordinates, a streetname, placename, even a country. If you insert a placename in Google Maps, Google Earth or GPScoordinaten.nl and you start to zoom in, Google Maps will first show you the placename, but if you zoom in even more the placename will disappear.
That is not the case with Google Earth or GPScoördinaten.nl. But all three programs have one thing in common: you end up at the same place, same circle, same dot. That is what we call 'the centroid'.

Normally the centroid (geometric center) of Belgium is Nil-Saint-Vincent, but if you enter 'Belgium' into those 3 programs you end up with a different centroid: between Chaussée and Mellet (Rue du Mitan).

It would be very nice when other geocachers (CO's) would go with this flow on this one. Making traditional caches of the centroids in Belgium. When you can't place a geocache on the exact coordinates, place it nearby and add a photograph of the true centroid location. Lots of work has yet to be done, because we have 589 communes in Belgium.
