Over the past century, Cheat Mountain has undergone a number of changes as man extracted its resources. From 1942-1960, Mower Lower Company harvested the original red spruce forest along the mountaintop. Between 1960 and its transfer to Monongahela National Forest, this area was strip mined for coal.
Important Visitor Notes
To access this cache, take US 250/WV 92 to the summit of Cheat Mountain. Follow FR 227 south for 0.8 miles. The road is gravel but is easily accessible for a passenger car.
Winter: FR 227 is not maintained in the winter. Due to its high elevation, Cheat Mountain can receive much more snow than the lower valleys. If FR 227 is snow-covered, you probably should not attempt this cache.
