This cache has been archived.

scoutmom08: This area is no longer a pleasant place to visit, due to vandalism and lack of trail maintenance, so I am archiving the cache. Thanks to all who have come in better times!

Geocache Description:

This is a family-friendly cache, a lock'n'lock under a man-made object in the 8-Acre Woods.

The Eight-Acre Woods is an 8 acre conservation/natural area located adjacent to Goffle Brook Park. The natural area protects a small wetland area and woodland that is a sanctuary to wildlife. It is also a popular bird watching spot.

The original cache container lived in these woods for several years as weathernowcast's now archived "Hawthorne's Millstones".  Here's a little history from that cache:

You will notice several millstones as you approach the cache.
They serve as trailmarkers. The millstones were excavated when a
local stormwater pipe was being buried near here. It is suspected
that the millstones were used as fill in a low lying area after
the local mills had shut down. Hawthorne was home to many mills in
the late 1800s. Of course it was called Manchester at the time.

These woods have benefited from at least 2 Eagle Scout projects.  One marked the trails, posted signs and produced this trail map:

Another later cleaned up the woods and repaired damage by vandals, replacing the trail signs, repairing structural damage to the observation decks and removing graffiti.
