A historic hotel in Greytown.
The Greytown Hotel, also known as "The Top Pub", was built in 1859 shortly after the new township of Greytown was established in 1854. This old Victorian hotel was the second hotel built in Greytown and has been running continuously for over 150 years having now had over 60 different licencees or owners. It is believed that The Greytown Hotel is New Zealand's oldest continuously operating licensed hotel.
When first constructed the hotel was described as "a snug little house at the upper end of the township". It contained "3 comfortable sitting rooms, dinning, billiard and commercial rooms, bar and parlour. bath room, with one bedroom on the lower floor and 13 bedrooms and one front sitting room, well furnished, on the second floor".
With time the hotel has expanded and when sold in 1905 the Greytown Hotel now could boast ,"16 bedrooms, 3 parlours as well as an attached 3 bedroom house with attached storehouses, harness and grooms room, coach house, stables and 7 boxes".
Today the Greytown hotel is owned by the community trust , has been completely refurbished and modernised and offers accomodation, resturant and bar services.
