Geocache Description:

A challenging cache in Mole St, Greytown

It is often said that if you wan't a street named after you become a mayor. Kempton, Wood, Udy, Wakelin, and Horton Streets, Loasby Place and Yule Grove are all named after former Greytown Mayors.  Famous dignitaries have also influenced street naming in Greytown and Balfour, Bidwill, Massey and Jellicoe Streets are evidence of this. Places provide a source of common place names and Reading, Church, Kuratawhiti, and Papawai Streets are all named after significant places. Perhaps the most common source of inspiration when naming streets has been the influence of former settler families. Hastwell, Cotter, Humphries, McMaster and Mole Streets are all named after early settler families.

Samuel Moles with his wife, Thomas Kempton and his son, as well as Ben Stevens and a reverend Brough are recorded as having been the first settlers to arrive in Greytown in March 1854. The borough plan produced in 1868 shows Samuel Moles as owning a small section on the main street in land designated "Town Acres" and a larger 40 acre block on the south side of Kuratawhiti St.

When the land was first settled it was no more than a survey line down the what is now the main street. Samuel Moles was reported as having one of the few cleared pieces of land at that time on which he planted a skull on a stick. Needless to say this block of land became known as "Skull Clearing". Samuel Moles later went on to become Greytown's first Post Master and a local store owner as well as successful farmer.

The cache is located  alongside a water race which is still located and functioning exactly as shown in the 1868 Greytown Borough Plan. It may require some challenge to remove the cache container. Please use stealth when removing and replacing the cache.
