Geocache Description:

The Battle of Verdun was one of the major battles during the First World War on the Western Front.  It was also one of the most deadly battles fought with somewhere between 700,000 and 1,000,000 soldiers dying in less than one year (1916).

It should take a geocacher a mininum of Thirty Seven Minutes Fifty One Seconds to solve this one.  We hope the history is appreciated and the lives lost remembered.

A handful of men against a fort of concrete and steel. A small barrel of wine rolls slowly down the road, stopping against a dead body. Fight to the limit. Run like hell, but no panic. You will not let them pass. They encouraged one another by their jokes and by their songs. The battlefield was a lunar landscape. I wished more than at any time of my life I could be in more than two places at once. The concentrated fury of ages raged and tore, shattered and killed, in one intensive struggle which has no parallel in the history of human savagery. What a pitiful sight they were. The forces of France will bleed to death. A French writer named the road "La Voie Sacree" (the Sacred Way). Its consoling to know that if one perishes in the barbed wire they will not be too much effected by the loss. Mutilated but undaunted. Turned men into flaming torches.
