Long time ago, nearly thirty years later, I can still remember the Dragon’s Lair video game cabinet glowing in the arcade. Laserdisc video, newly minted technology, entered the mainstream and in 1983 Cinematronics applied this technology to an innovative, thrilling game called Dragon’s Lair.

Limitations of the medium, when laserdisc players were designed for home theaters, originally included excessive strain on the machine leading to a shortened lifespan within the arcade. Despite the technical limitations, students of the game appreciated and were thrilled, enthralled actually, visually by the fully animated and interactive cut-scenes which contributed to the game’s wild success. Dirk the Daring, entering the game as a blundering hero, now searches for Princess Daphne who is locked away within a castle, that is guarded by Singe the dragon. Legendary artist Don Bluth, who worked on epic films such as The Secret of NIHM and An American Tale, offers us an imaginative world of masterfully animated scenes through numerous memorable obstacles including the Boulder Trench, the Crypt, Wizard’s Kitchen, or the Underground River.

Reflexes are the key to winning this game as you maneuver Dirk either left (L) or right (R) or up (U) or down (D), or with the additional sword (S) swing. Understanding the specific timing of each scene is crucial to winning Dragon’s Lair as only precise movements will result in your character moving to the next scene. Reception for the game was incredibly positive and within the first year Cinematronics earned $32 million. Re-released versions of Dragon’s Lair have been made available for numerous platforms in the last three decades including: Sega and XBox, NES and SNES, even Apple iPhone which have only boosted the game’s legacy. Understandably the ditsy-voiced and half-clothed Princess Daphne elicited mixed reactions from critics. Lastly Dragon’s Lair is only one of three video games (along with Pong and Pac-Man) that is on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.

FTF congrats to jeffshly!
